Universal Genetics offers a variety of DNA tests for the Native American tribes. The DNA results are typically used in enrollment, disenrollment, claiming social benefits, or simply for peace of mind. We understand the impact that this testing service has on the Native American community and try to use our expertise for the community’s overall interests. The DNA tests that are utilized by different tribes include standard paternity/maternity test, Native American ancestry test, Y-STR paternal lineage test, mtDNA maternal lineage test, and other kinship tests.
Paternity DNA Test
This DNA test determines if a tribal member is the biological father of a child. It produces conclusive results to prove this relationship. If the alleged father is not the biological father, the probability of paternity is 0%. If he is the biological father, the probability of paternity is greater than 99.0%.
Maternity DNA Test
This DNA test determines if a tribal member is the biological mother of a child. It produces conclusive results to prove this relationship. If the alleged mother is not the biological mother, the probability of maternity is 0%. If she is the biological mother, the probability of maternity is greater than 99.0%.
Native American Ancestry DNA Test
This DNA test determines the ancestral composition of an individual’s DNA fingerprint. During the migration of the human population, Native Americans developed a distinctive genetic trail that is not found among other races. This test shows the percentage of a person’s DNA consistent with the Native American population and the percentage of his or her DNA consistent with the Caucasian, East Asian, and Sub-Saharan African populations.
Y-STR DNA Test
This DNA test determines if two males are paternally related. The Y-Chromosome is passed from father to son relatively unchanged through many generations. Males sharing the same male ancestor have the same or very similar Y-STR DNA profile.
mt DNA Test
This DNA test determines if two individuals are maternally related. The mtDNA is passed from mother to children relatively unchanged through many generations. Individuals sharing the same female ancestor have the same or very similar mtDNA sequences.
Other kinship DNA Tests
These DNA tests include aunt/uncle test, siblingship test, and grandparentage test. When the biological parent(s) is not available for testing, these tests can be used to confirm paternity or maternity indirectly. Depending on the number of known relatives available for testing, these tests can be conclusive or show the probability of relatedness to a certain degree.
